The workshop “Solutions for the sustainable and integrated water management in the POCTEP area”, organized by the Aquamundam project, was held on the 07th June at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra.
Some of the companies responsible for water management in the Portuguese Central Region, Águas de Coimbra, Águas do Centro Litoral and INOVA (Cantanhede) were the main guests at this workshop, organized by Instituto Pedro Nunes in cooperation with the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra.
Two of the main problems experienced by the water management entities are water losses in the water supply system and undue flooding in the wastewater drainage system. In relation to the first of the two, it should be noted that water losses have a significant impact on the economic and financial level of the management entity, since these translate into loss of potential revenues.
Concerning the issue of undue inflows, they cause significant volumes of water that do not require treatment to enter drainage networks, significantly increasing the volumes of water delivered for treatment. This phenomenon is of concern in contexts of significant rainfall events, which cause rise in groundwater levels as well as undue rainfall entry into the wastewater network.
Thus, within the scope of the event, the strategies to combat losses (supply network) and undue inflows (drainage system) currently implemented by each of the companies, as well as strategies outlined for the future, were presented and discussed.
